Time, temperature and clean containers decide milk quality. Here is how to protect all three.
Raw milk is an ideal home for bacteria, so how you handle it in the first hours decides its quality. You control three things: cleanliness, temperature and time.

1. Clean containers
Use clean, sanitized stainless steel or food-grade cans every time. Dirty cans are the most common cause of sour milk.
2. Cool it quickly
Cool milk soon after milking and keep it cool until it reaches the collection point or dairy. Never leave cans in direct sun.
3. Cut transport time
Plan routes so milk is not waiting for long. Fill cans properly to limit sloshing, and close the lid tightly. Lockable milk cans help prevent spills and contamination on rough roads.
4. Filter and test
Filter milk before storage and test at the collection centre. Reject and remove poor milk quickly so it does not affect the rest.
Why it pays
Better-kept milk scores higher on quality tests, gets better prices and means fewer losses from rejected lots.
Frequently asked questions
Why does milk spoil quickly in summer?
Warm temperatures let bacteria multiply faster. Cool milk soon after milking and keep cans shaded during transport.
Do lockable cans help?
Yes. A locking lid with a rubber washer reduces spillage and contamination on rough roads.
