What SS 304 means, why it suits milk-contact equipment, and what to check before you buy.

When you buy stainless steel dairy equipment you will often see the words "SS 304" or "304 grade". It is the most common stainless steel used where food and milk are involved.

What SS 304 means

Stainless steel gets its corrosion resistance from chromium. SS 304 contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which forms a thin protective layer on the surface. That layer is why the metal does not rust easily and stays clean-looking.

Food-grade SS 304 is used for cans that carry milk every day.

Why it suits milk

  • Hygienic: a smooth, non-porous surface that does not hold milk residue.
  • No taste or odour transfer, so milk keeps its natural flavour.
  • Handles cleaning: withstands hot water, steam and food-safe detergents.

What to check before buying

  • A material test certificate for the steel grade.
  • Clean, smooth welds with a polished interior.
  • A sturdy neck, rolled edge and a lid that fits properly.

Our 50 LTR milk can and the rest of the stainless steel range are made from SS 304 grade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SS 304 and SS 316?

SS 316 adds molybdenum for better resistance to salts and harsh chemicals. For normal milk handling, SS 304 is the standard and more economical choice.

How can I check that a can is really SS 304?

Ask the supplier for a mill or material test certificate. Cost alone is not a reliable guide, so be careful with unusually cheap offers.
